This is our charity shop in Stonehaven with the aim of supporting Christian mission projects locally, nationally and internationally. The shop is staffed by volunteers mainly from the churches and community, with one paid employee (shop manager). Locally donated items are sorted and sold by volunteers, with excess items being passed on to Blytheswood Trust (a Christian humanitarian organisation), or to a recycling company. After running costs for the shop, all other monies are disbursed to Christian charities and local social needs. In May 2024, Far and Wide celebrated 30 years of supporting community and overseas mission.
From the donated items we receive, we support and assist people in Aberdeenshire working in partnership with Aberdeenshire Council social work department, help local good causes and assist organisations working in many overseas areas of need.
From a council house in an Aberdeenshire village meeting a family break-up situation and looking at bare floor boards and a mother who cannot offer a cup of tea because she has no cooker, kettle or cups; to a SCIAF project in South America; an orphanage in Europe; a fish farm project in West Africa; the discarded goods from Stonehaven have brought comfort, dignity and a sense of belonging to many in need.
Far and Wide works closely with the local Social Work department, mainly through the foodbank and any requested Local Social Needs. Foodbank donations can be handed in on Fri 10.30am-12noon and are collected as part of the weekly offering at Fetteresso. We donate gifts through a giving tree for children and the elderly, identified as in need of additional support by local social services, at Christmas.
Activities are managed by a separate managing committee comprising representatives from the congregations within the town. The shop has a Christian presence in the town and at the same time helps to meet the needs in our community and beyond. In pursuing its aims, Far and Wide seeks to encourage and develop a Christian presence, witness and outreach within the town.
